Getting Started with Pumpkin Carving
Everything you need to know before you pick up a knife — tools, pumpkin selection, workspace setup, and safety tips.
Pumpkin carving season is one of my favorite times of year. Whether you’re carving with kids or going for a competition-level design, the basics are the same.
Choosing Your Pumpkin
Look for a pumpkin with a flat base (so it won’t roll), a firm exterior with no soft spots, and a shape that suits your design. Tall pumpkins work well for portraits; wide pumpkins are great for panoramic scenes.
Essential Tools
You don’t need much to get started:
- Large knife — for the lid and lid removal
- Scoop or spoon — a large metal serving spoon works great
- Detail knife — a small serrated pumpkin knife, or an X-Acto
- Dry-erase marker — draw your design before cutting
- Newspaper — protect your workspace
Safety First
- Always cut away from your body
- Keep your free hand clear of the blade path
- Kids should use safe pumpkin-carving knives, not kitchen knives
Prep Your Pumpkin
Remove the seeds and scrape the inner wall down to about 1 inch thick. Thinner walls let more light through; thicker walls are easier to control for beginners.
Happy carving!
